Schools

Although Port Ludlow was originally developed as an active retiree community, and residents are still primarily older rather than younger, the trend has been towards younger people moving in. There is a mix of ages in Port Ludlow. On average, the North Bay area is a little younger than the South Bay area, and includes more families.

Port Ludlow is part of the Chimacum school district for elementary, middle, and high school students. Many Port Ludlow residents, particularly AAUW members, volunteer their time as math, science, or reading tutors.

You don't have to be a kid to go to school. Many Port Ludlow residents enjoy live-long learning, and opportunities are plentiful.

The Jefferson Education Consortium sponsors a wide variety of degree and non-degree programs though its' partners. Jefferson Education Consortium partners include University of Washington, Washington State University, Chapman University Academic Centers, Peninsula College, Centrum Arts & Creative Education, Northwest School of Boat Building, Port Townsend Marine Science Center, Western Washington University, City University, and Old Dominion University.

Additionally, Washington State University (WSU) operates a learning center in Port Hadlock (about fifteen minutes driving time from Port Ludlow). The extension programs focus on agriculture and education & economic development through technology. This is also the home of the WSU Water / Beach Watchers, Shore Stewards, and Master Gardeners programs. Water Watchers, Shore Stewards, and Master Gardeners are volunteer programs. Participants receive a free university-level education and then select between a variety of fun and interesting volunteer activities to give back to the community by helping improve the health of Jefferson County's natural environment. The Marine Science Center's docent program is similar, but obviously the focus is on marine life instead of streams, beaches, and/or gardens.

Peninsula College conducts a full range of community college programs at Fort Worden (Port Townsend) and on their main campus in Port Angeles.

Olympic College also conducts a full range of community college programs at their campuses in Poulsbo and at the Naval Base Kitsap, and elsewhere in Kitsap.

The WSU Distance Degree program is world class and offers an impressive variety of bachelors and masters degree programs that can be attended in your pajamas and on a schedule which does not interfere with your golf, tennis, boating, bridge, or other favorite social activities (or your work schedule).

Libraries

The Port Hadlock branch of the Jefferson County Library system is a full service library. In addition to traditional services such as fiction and nonfiction books and knowledgable reference librarians, they loan movies and music, and maintain a bank of about 20 computers which are free to the public. The Port Hadlock Library also has interesting programs such as author readings and business seminars.

The Jefferson County Library Bookmobile visits Port Ludlow weekly, on Wednesdays, to accommodate those who can't or don't wish to travel to the library.

Both the Port Ludlow Bay Club and the Port Ludlow Beach Club have Lending Libraries which are free to club members.
